Business Etiquette: I Demand They Add This to School Curriculums

I can’t believe that just happened!!!

Have you ever asked yourself that question after a so-called business encounter?

Sometimes, I wish they actually taught a business etiquette class in college. Maybe even in High School! Some things you just know, but not everyone else gets it, right?

In business, accountability is number one in my book. A person of their word always gets major points. However, the individual that says, “Hey let’s do lunch babe,” as they tilt their Hollywood shades and wink…well, I’m not a fond of those types. Let’s not forget that they don’t even suggest an actual date that you can write down in your calendar.

On the Own Your Power Radio show, we actually did a topic on Business Etiquette and had loads of fun talking about the do’s and don’ts from networking, to phone calls, and emails. We had guests Tamisa Covington and Malik Yoba who chimed with their tips. It’s important for even those of us who think we know it all, to brush up a bit on some things, including business dining.

Some business etiquette faux pas that I can recall seeing in my business encounters were:

•Breath that almost cinged off my eyebrows. LOL! Please bring mints with you to events, especially after having the tuna casserole!
•Chewing gum during TV or Radio interviews. Can someone say TACKY!
•“Come Here” cleavage that screams night club and not a networking event
•Late for meetings and not calling to let anyone know
•Not returning phone calls within at least 48 hrs
•Too much perfume or cologne
•Very casual attire for a business banquet
•Poor eye contact shows a lack of confidence. However, don't overdo it and stare like a weirdo. :)
•Taking phone calls thoughout your meetings. NOT COOL!

Tune into the show and hear many more!

A few of Tamisa Covington’s (ETIQUETTE CONSULTANT) favorite business etiquette tips…

Running a business is a rewarding labor of love, in my opinion. However, we have to also keep in mind that the business arena is wrought full of pitfalls. Let me share a few tips in business etiquette that will help to keep you at the top of your game. Most of these tips, if not all of them are probably something that you’ve heard at one time or another; however, a little refresher never hurts!

Do have integrity in all you do. Integrity and character are so important and the bottom line is this; people like doing business with people they like. So do what you say you’re going to do, follow up when you say you will, and always treat people with dignity and respect.

Do turn off your cell phone! I know that we claim to be handicapped without them, however, there is nothing ruder than attending a meeting and having to hear an 80’s club song as someone’s ringer…. The considerate thing to do is to either:
Turn the phone off until after the meeting
If you can’t turn it off because you may miss an important call, put it on manner mode or vibrate and let everyone in the meeting know ahead of time that you may need to be excused if your phone rings because you are expecting an important call that can’t wait

Don’t forget to say thank you. I don’t mean go to hallmark.com and send an e-card either. If you truly appreciated closing that deal or if a sale went through without a hiccup, take the time out to send a nice handwritten thank you card. Not only is it the right thing to do, but the person on the receiving end will not forget your gratitude.

Do remember that business is business. Although you may have been conducting business with this person or company for years, remember that this is a working relationship. Use moderation in personal exchanges and avoid discussing in depth personal or private issues. Remember to not get too familiar with your clients or vendors (or what have you). The focus should remain on the business aspect of things as to not offend or distract those whom you have a working relationship with.

Upcoming Events:

We have many events this month…I’m going to speaking at various women’s events in Miami, please check out the locations here. I’d love to see you in attendance!

Retro Marketing: Are We Living in the Past?

“You’re living in the past man!” My cousin Samara would say…(Yes that's me at 2 years old playing dress up in my mom's wig and shoes.)

My cousin would always joke around about my fascination with the past. Just from looking at my DVD collection or the television shows that I watch such as...
• TV LAND
• NICK @ NITE--especially Bewitched reruns!
• Any VH1 Totally 80’s or 70’s show
• Old Cartoons
• My Colombo Box set (hey it was on sale) LOL
• Good Times reruns
• My CD collection

Oh yeah, I get a rush watching things that remind me of the good old days.
Well, my “good old days” were great! I must say that I had a wonderful childhood thanks to my mom.

When the memories flood in, when the smiles come across our faces from nostalgic moments …that’s when we usually open our wallets to turn back the hands of time even more. Wouldn’t you agree? Just look at how we run in droves to X-MEN, Fantastic 4 and Spiderman movies for example!

Living in the past, as cousin Samara says, is what drives so many sales. Retro Marketing, Nostalgia Marketing is an extremely effective push button. Memories of love, our childhood, and comforts of home…these are the few elements that urge us to buy. They keep us brand loyal as well, because of those fond memories.

Brand loyal consumers are what you want, because they are self-confident in their purchase. They don’t hesitate...they don’t compare. They stick with the tried and true.
Think about it, how many things do you have in your cabinet or fridge right now, because that’s what you grew up on? Think about the things you own, because it reminds you of YOUR good old days that you just can seem to let go of.

Some examples you might find:
• Campbell’s chicken soup in case you get sick
• Quick Cocoa that your mom would make you every night…oh maybe that’s just me.
• Eighties Tee shirts, because we look so cool rocking that Atari or Rubix Cube logo
• The Best of New Edition CD because you still have a crush on Ralph Tresvant.
• That Totally 80’s cd, because Billy Joel was the man!
• That cool Retro lamp and office furniture you bought from Target, because there was no denying that the 70’s were just so FUNKY!

Nostalgia grabs you tight and hugs your heart and yes, tugs your wallet.

I just laugh when I look at my husband Hasan get all goggled eyed when the commercial for the Transformers movie comes on. “We gotta go see that, baby!” He says. It’s like he’s 10 again reading the comic book.

So tell me, are we living in the past? Were the days of yesteryear that much better? Don’t look at me, just turn on the TV or look at your MP3 collections.

That 70’s shows
The Wonder years
I Love Lucy
The Jefferson reruns don’t stop…
Nostalgia marketing creates magic memories and I have to say that I’m a big fan of it!

Why use it?
• If you want to sell the spirit of an event/product or service
• Hit that emotional push button in your audience to evoke good memories
• Show the fun energy of your business, product or service

How to use it:
Now I’m not saying to show up to work with an Angela Davis Fro and a Diashiki with a peace sign emblem around your neck, however there are some things you can do from time to time if this approach will work for your audience.

• You can use it in your design with a retro font (Target and Ikea's designs are very retro)
• Throw a retro party for your business i.e.: 70’s or 80’s party
• Jingles for your business that can be memorable (This will be! Everlasting Love…EHarmony commercial)
• Music you play in your office
• Antique furniture
• Gifts for clients such as (Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Billy Holiday, Mile Davis, Isaac Hayes Boxes). Of course, find out their musical taste first.
• Special celebrity guest speaker i.e. get Patti Labelle
• Slang, old school terminology: Groovy, funky…
• Vintage clothing (From Salvation Army to Urban Outfitters)

I’ll be back soon, I have to go pick out my ‘fro. LOL

Well, it's been a long time...

I know, I know...I have fallin' off with my newsletter writing. :( It's one of my biggest success strategies, yet I haven't been able to sit still and write one for a minute. The Own Your Power radio show has definitely taken on a life of it's own and I like to call it my AUDIO newsletter. You can now tune in each week or check out our archives here if you need a bit of inspiration or ideas, http://www.ownyourpowerradio.com.

It's been a fun rollercoaster and I am just so excited for what's to come. My friend Audrey warned me that with the radio and retreat, I would have to slow down a bit because it was going to take over. I can see how when you are passionate about something and have such a good time doing it, you forget that there are other things that need attention. Delegation is the key and I'm usually pretty good at it, but the newsletter, I love to write myself and delegate parts of it. So, as an easy way to make it work, I decided, why not start a blog? It's short, to the point and I'll give you little doses of marketing and fun. What I do best! lol

Welcome all to the NEW beginning of my marketing tips, with a quick update on what's going on, cool events to attend, and I'll be featuring a few friends each time! So, if you have any topic ideas you'd like me to share, please feel free to shoot 'em over to me at simone@ownyourpower.biz.

Check out the new company name as well, Own Your Power Communications (www.ownyourpower.biz). I've very excited about this new change and I'll talk about it more in the weeks ahead.

I'll be back real soon with some marketing tips for ya, just like old times! I have so much to share with you all and I'm glad to be back writing once again. Stay tuned!
